Window Grid Interior (Photogravure Study) — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Window Grid Interior is part of a series of four photogravures exploring the stillness and atmosphere of factory spaces through light, shadow, and reflection.
In this print, the industrial interior is reduced to its essential geometry: tall windows glowing against deep darkness, their rectangular forms hovering like illuminated panels within the space. The floor below catches fragments of reflection, suggesting wet surface and quiet movement of light.
Photogravure allows the image to exist through tone rather than line. Dense blacks hold the structure of the room, while softened greys and lifted highlights give the windows their luminous presence. The balance between darkness and light creates a suspended mood — as though the space is empty, paused, and listening.
The architectural framework becomes almost abstract. The windows are not only sources of illumination but compositional anchors, shaping the entire atmosphere of the print. The work captures something incidental and fleeting: how light falls, how shadow gathers, and how an ordinary interior can become quietly monumental.
This series reflects Jenny Mason-Gunning’s interest in industrial spaces as places of unexpected beauty — where photography and photogravure combine to hold stillness, texture, and emotional presence.
