Violet Canopy (Double Drop) — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Violet Canopy is part of the Double Drop series — a body of work combining relief colour printing with intaglio depth to create bold, atmospheric tree silhouettes.
The background is printed first using relief ink and a rainbow roll, allowing the colours to shift naturally across the surface. In this piece, violet tones melt into deep blue, suggesting dusk, fading light, or the last moments of sky before night. The colour layer is fluid and luminous, creating atmosphere before the structure arrives.
Once the background has been printed, the steel intaglio plate is inked and printed directly over the top in a second pass — a technique known as double drop printing. The silhouetted tree emerges in dense, velvety black, enriched with aquatint to hold depth and richness. The contrast is immediate and striking.
The tree itself leans and stretches across the frame, its branching structure cutting sharply against the coloured sky. There is strength in its silhouette — graphic and uncompromising — yet movement in its gesture, as if shaped by wind.
Printed under heavy pressure onto fine art paper, the plate leaves a distinct embossed impression, reinforcing the physicality of the process. The result is a print that balances colour, structure, and force — simple in composition, but powerful in presence.
Part of a larger collection, many works from this series sold quickly upon release, reflecting the immediate impact of these bold canopy forms.
