Description
Millichamp is an artist and educator, working in Shropshire and the West Midlands. Born and raised in Wolverhampton, now living in Shrewsbury, he studied at The School of Art, University of Wolverhampton and The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, City of Birmingham University and currently Head of Creative Technologies at Shrewsbury High School.
James takes inspiration from his surroundings and his exhibition work shows his response to the Shropshire landscape.
“Colour and form are treated in an abstract way, inspired by artists such as Per Adolfsen, Edward Kemshell and Sigmar Polke. Linear elements are minimal but descriptive, almost illustrative, giving the viewer the opportunity to interpret and populate the scene. The relationship between the environment and oneself is a wholly personal and spiritual thing. Amidst the howling storm of contemporary culture, one is separate, alone, a silent observer, cut off from the cacophonous noise of the human condition. Are we not all alone amongst the baying crowds?”
James has curated many exhibitions across the West Midlands and have exhibited at The RBSA, Digbeth Art Space, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Newcastle Museum and Art Gallery, Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery, Fresh Art in the Islington Business Design Centre, amongst others, and recently completed a Residency at The School of Art, University of Wolverhampton.
