Verdant Canopy — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Verdant Canopy is an A4-sized linocut print exploring the graphic beauty of trees seen from below. Printed in a gentle green, the work captures the intricate branching structure of the canopy as it stretches across the sky, forming a dense network of interwoven lines and silhouette.
The composition is reduced to its essentials — branch and space, form and ground — allowing the natural architecture of the tree to become the subject. The simplicity of the linocut process gives the image clarity and immediacy, while the complexity of the branching creates depth through pattern alone.
The soft green ink brings a sense of quiet atmosphere to the piece, suggesting new growth, filtered light, and the calm of standing beneath trees. There is both stillness and movement within the canopy: an organic lattice that feels at once delicate and strong.
Printed at approximately A4 scale, Verdant Canopy continues Jenny Mason-Gunning’s exploration of woodland forms through bold silhouette and reduction of tone. The work celebrates the power of contrast and the ability of printmaking to evoke space, light, and presence through the simplest means.
