The Witches Tree — Jenny Mason-Gunning
The Witches Tree is a monumental aquatint etching, larger than A2 in scale, defined by its striking tonal depth and commanding presence. Standing alone within the composition, the tree becomes both subject and symbol — twisted, enduring, and intensely atmospheric.
Aquatint allows this piece to speak through tone rather than line. The sky and surrounding space are built from rich layers of darkness, moving from velvety black to softened greys and subtle highlights. These tonal passages create a sense of stillness and tension, as though the tree is held within a charged silence.
The tree itself rises starkly from the ground, its form skeletal yet powerful. It feels weathered by time, shaped by wind and history, rooted in the landscape with an almost supernatural character. The simplicity of the composition only heightens its impact — the viewer is drawn directly into the encounter with the solitary form.
The large scale of the plate intensifies the immersive quality of the work. At this size, the tonal fields become expansive, and the tree’s presence feels monumental, as if standing before it in real space.
The Witches Tree is a celebration of aquatint at its most expressive — a print where atmosphere, depth, and quiet drama are carried entirely through tone. It is both haunting and beautiful: a meditation on landscape, endurance, and the powerful silhouette of a single tree against darkness.
