The Silence of St Davids – Monuments Series by Jenny Mason-Gunning
The Silence of St Davids is a limited edition aquatint etching by Jenny Mason-Gunning, created as part of her Monuments Series and inspired by the enduring presence of St Davids Cathedral.
This remarkable place has been woven into Jenny’s life since childhood. Family holidays brought her here often, and over time the cathedral became more than architecture — it became atmosphere, memory and belonging. The experience of standing before it never diminishes. Its scale is striking, its age palpable, and its silence deeply moving.
In this etching, the cathedral is rendered not only as structure, but as presence. The aquatint process allows for velvety tonal depth, rich shadows and luminous passages of light that emphasise the strength of the stone and the quiet weight of history. The composition balances architectural detail with atmosphere, allowing the viewer to feel the stillness that surrounds the building.
St Davids is both monumental and intimate. Though grand in form, it holds a softness — shaped by centuries of wind, worship and weather. This print reflects that duality: strength and calm, permanence and tenderness.
Printed at 520 mm × 694 mm, the generous paper size gives the cathedral room to breathe, enhancing its stature and quiet grandeur. Each impression is hand printed in a limited edition of 25 using traditional intaglio methods, ensuring depth, clarity and lasting quality.
