The Light Inside the Factory – Aga Rayburn Factory Series Jenny Mason-Gunning Aquatint Etching
The Light Inside the Factory – Aga Rayburn Factory Series
is an aquatint etching by Jenny Mason-Gunning, created as part of her Aga Rayburn Factory Series — a body of work inspired by the haunting spaces and quiet architecture of the historic Aga Rayburn factory.
In this piece, light becomes the central presence. Within the shadowed interior, illumination falls through openings and structural gaps, revealing form while leaving much of the space suspended in darkness. The contrast between heavy industrial architecture and fragile light creates a powerful emotional tension.
Aquatint allows Jenny to build a full tonal range, from velvety blacks to soft greys and luminous highlights. The factory is rendered not simply as a building, but as an atmosphere — a place where time feels slowed, where absence becomes palpable, and where light transforms abandonment into something almost sacred.
This work reflects one of the key themes of the series: the quiet beauty that can exist inside forgotten places. Even within decay and stillness, there are moments of brightness — traces of life, memory, and space held open by light.
Each impression is hand printed using traditional intaglio methods, preserving the depth, richness and subtle tonal character that aquatint brings.
