The Ironbridge in Light by Jenny Mason-Gunning
This striking solar plate relief print is made with light very much in mind. The way the light falls across the side of the bridge almost washes away the colour, leaving the structure glowing against its surroundings. It is this brilliance and contrast that gives the piece its quiet power.
Using the solar plate process allows an extraordinary level of detail to remain within the image. Even where the light appears to dissolve the surface, the fine lines and textures of the bridge are still held beautifully within the plate. The result is a print that feels both luminous and solid at the same time — the structure revealed through light rather than shadow.
The Ironbridge itself is an enduring symbol of engineering and history, and in this work the focus shifts slightly from the monument alone to the atmosphere around it. The light becomes part of the composition, lifting the form of the bridge and allowing the intricate structure to emerge with clarity and elegance.
Printed from a solar plate in relief, the medium gives the image a crisp strength while preserving delicate tonal detail. The balance between brightness and structure creates a piece that is both bold and refined, celebrating one of Britain’s most recognisable landmarks through the language of print.
