About the Artist
Su France’s is. Lincolnshire based printmaker and earth pigment artist. Her printmaking emerges from her rural Lincolnshire landscape, capturing nature’s intricate details through sustainable practices. Using collagraph, solar plate, monoprint, and debossing techniques, she transforms carefully collected botanical elements into textural prints.
Her recent work explores themes of resilience and renewal, drawing inspiration from ceramics—particularly kintsugi’s metaphors. Using earth pigments, hand-ground local materials, and precious metals such as gold and silver, Su creates pieces that celebrate the land’s worth.
Her prints invite contemplation, balancing delicate textures with symbolic representations of natural cycles, preservation, and the beauty of imperfection.
What is Precious?- Earth Pigment on linen
I explore the concept of preciousness through a thoughtful selection of materials and subject matter. Working with simple linens and paper, I apply hand-ground earth pigments, incorporate oxidized silver elements through delicate stitching, and embellish with Japanese gold thread and leaf. These choices reflect a deliberate contrast between humble substrates and materials traditionally associated with value.
I draw inspiration from the rhythms and patterns of arable farms, where I witness the changing seasons, depicting earth marks, seed drills, and crop patterns, inviting viewers to contemplate the often-overlooked beauty and importance of land of earth. By focusing on these agricultural imprints, I aim to elevate the significance of soil – the six inches that nourish and sustain both us and countless ecosystems.
Through this work, I encourage a shift in perspective, asking viewers to reconsider what we deem precious. Much like the Japanese art of kintsugi, which transforms broken ceramics into objects of beauty; highlighting their imperfections, my art seeks to reveal the inherent value in the seemingly ordinary.
By drawing attention to the intricate patterns of cultivated earth and the vital role of soil, I hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world that supports all life, presenting it as something truly precious and worthy of our care and reverence.
