About the Artwork
Vincent van Gogh found inspiration in Augustine Roulin and her family, seeing them as exemplars of love and familial bonds. In this particular portrait, Roulin gently rocks a cradle by pulling on a rope, embodying the title La Berceuse (the lullaby). Van Gogh aimed to convey a consoling presence, describing his palette as a comforting “lullaby in colors.”
This image, one of five versions painted by Van Gogh, was completed in January 1889, shortly after his return from the hospital following Paul Gauguin’s tumultuous departure. Madame Roulin occupies Gauguin’s chair in the painting, symbolizing Van Gogh’s attempt to fill the void left by the older artist. In a gesture of reconciliation and friendship, Van Gogh presented this canvas to Gauguin in May 1889, specifying that it should be displayed between two sunflower paintings.
