Mark Study is a pared-back exploration of the fundamental language of linocut. Created using traditional hessian-backed lino, this piece deliberately reduces the process to its simplest possible form.
The plate was cut with direct, obvious marks — lines, grooves, and incisions that clearly reveal the action of the tool. There is no attempt to disguise the technique or soften the carving. Instead, the work focuses on what lino does best: holding bold, decisive cuts and translating them into crisp, graphic form.
By stripping the image back to essential marks, the print becomes a demonstration of possibility. It shows how different pressures, angles, and tools create varied line qualities — from sharp, narrow incisions to wider, more assertive cuts. The surface becomes a record of gesture and decision.
Hessian-backed lino carries a particular character. It is responsive yet resistant, allowing the blade to move cleanly while retaining structure. The resulting print is both instructional and expressive — simple in appearance, but rooted in the physical experience of cutting.
Mark Study is not a finished narrative image, but an investigation — a reminder that the strength of printmaking often lies in the clarity of its marks.
