Ironbridge Arch — Aquatint Etching — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Ironbridge Arch is a large-scale aquatint etching, slightly over A2 in size, capturing the iconic structure of the Iron Bridge from beneath its sweeping curve. The viewpoint draws the eye through the engineering of the arch and into the landscape beyond, revealing the bridge not only as a landmark, but as an experience of space, weight, and history.
Aquatint gives this print its extraordinary depth. Layered tonal passages build from velvety shadow to softened light, allowing the ironwork to emerge with both solidity and atmosphere. The darkness beneath the arch holds the structure in dramatic contrast, while the distant landscape breathes through subtle mid-tones.
Made many decades ago, this plate remains one of Jenny Mason-Gunning’s most striking and enduring works — a testament to the lasting power of aquatint to convey monument, presence, and time. The composition balances architectural strength with quiet stillness, capturing Ironbridge as both industrial achievement and poetic form.
Printed in a small edition, this work is now exceptionally scarce. Only two prints remain available, making this a rare opportunity to acquire one of the artist’s earlier major aquatint etchings.
Ironbridge Arch stands as a landmark print: bold, timeless, and deeply rooted in place.
