Feathered Bloom (Monotype) — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Feathered Bloom is a unique monotype created using feathers and botanical forms, made as part of the same series of natural-material prints exploring delicacy, texture, and colour.
In this piece, the feather becomes a central structural element — a bold, sweeping form cutting through the composition. Around it, flowers and plant shapes press softly into the surface, their details captured through direct contact with ink. The combination of feather and flora creates a balance between strength and fragility, movement and stillness.
The colour palette is vivid and expressive. Deep blues, violets, and cool tonal shifts bring intensity to the print, while lighter floral impressions lift through the darker ground. The result is atmospheric but energetic — a work that feels both natural and abstract, like a fragment of meadow or sky transformed through process.
Monotype allows for spontaneity and freedom. Each impression is formed through intuitive inking, placement, and pressure, meaning no two works can ever be repeated. The natural materials introduce unpredictability, making the final image a one-off record of gesture and trace.
Feathered Bloom celebrates the beauty of organic forms held briefly in ink — a print that is both expressive and intimate, combining strong colour with the quiet intricacy of nature.
