Evening Botanicals (Monotype) — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Evening Botanicals is a unique monotype created using real plant forms to capture delicate structure and fleeting detail. The stems and blossoms were pressed into ink, allowing their natural shapes to transfer directly onto the paper with immediacy and sensitivity.
The composition balances vibrant pink blossoms against a deep blue ground, creating a sense of quiet contrast. The flowers appear almost suspended — light, airy, and gently reaching — while the surrounding space suggests sky or dusk light fading into evening.
Monotype is inherently spontaneous. The inking process allows for subtle variation, layering, and softness, meaning this image could never be repeated in exactly the same way. Each gesture, each placement of the plants, belongs to this single impression.
The work focuses on fragility and presence — the way small botanical forms can hold remarkable detail when given space. The colours sit harmoniously together, creating calm while still retaining energy.
As a one-off print, Evening Botanicals celebrates the quiet beauty of natural forms and the expressive freedom of monotype printing.
