Crimson Dusk Canopy (Double Drop) — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Crimson Dusk Canopy is part of Jenny Mason-Gunning’s Double Drop series — a collection of prints that combine relief colour printing with the dramatic depth of intaglio silhouette.
Each work begins with a rainbow-rolled relief background, printed first to establish atmosphere and colour. In this piece, turquoise and deep blue are charged with a vivid crimson dusk at the horizon, creating a sky that feels luminous, unsettled, and alive with shifting light.
The second pass is the double drop: the steel intaglio plate is inked separately and printed directly over the colour field. The trees emerge as bold black silhouettes, enriched with aquatint to produce a dense, velvety darkness. The branches and trunks cut sharply through the sky, their forms both graphic and expressive.
Here, the clustered canopy feels almost like a gathering of figures — rooted, still, and watchful against the fading light. The simplicity of silhouette gives the image its strength, while the colour beneath introduces mood and tension.
Printed under heavy pressure, the plate leaves a strong embossed impression in the paper, reinforcing the physical trace of the process. The result is a contemporary print that balances colour, structure, and atmosphere with striking immediacy.
Part of a wider series, many of these Double Drop Canopy works sold quickly upon printing, reflecting their bold presence and collectable impact.
