Canopy — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Canopy is a relief solar plate photogravure defined by its striking two-tone composition. Printed in a rich turquoise blue, the silhouetted tree canopy spreads across the surface in a dense network of interlocking branches, creating a dramatic graphic presence.
Unlike tonal photogravure, this relief plate works through contrast alone. The image is reduced to shadow and sky — a powerful silhouette where the tree becomes structure, pattern, and movement all at once. The absence of mid-tones heightens the impact. Every branch cuts sharply against the turquoise ground, creating a sense of depth through negative space rather than shading.
Looking upward into the canopy, the branches twist and overlap, forming an almost architectural lattice. There is something both organic and structural in its form — wild growth held within a strong, controlled composition.
Printed as a relief solar plate, the surface is crisp and direct. The process allows the bold graphic quality of the tree to remain clean and uncompromising, while the colour choice adds atmosphere and contemporary edge.
Canopy is a celebration of silhouette — a reminder that sometimes the most powerful images are built from the simplest contrasts: light and dark, ground and form, sky and tree.
