Callanish Monument — Aquatint Etching — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Callanish Stones is an A3 aquatint etching capturing the powerful presence of the standing stones on the Isle of Lewis and Harris. Though modest in scale, the composition carries remarkable intensity through contrast, texture, and tonal depth.
The stones rise dark and solid against a dramatic, movement-filled sky. Their forms are reduced to bold silhouettes, grounded and weathered, while the sky above is alive with layered aquatint marks that create a sense of shifting atmosphere.
Aquatint gives the print its richness. The sky is built from textured tonal passages, ranging from deep velvety blacks to softened greys and lifted highlights. This interplay of tone brings the landscape to life without relying on excessive detail. The power of the image lies in its restraint — stone and sky held in tension.
At approximately A3 in size, the work feels concentrated and direct. The viewer is drawn into the contrast between grounded monument and restless sky, experiencing the quiet drama of this ancient site.
Callanish Stones reflects an enduring fascination with place, permanence, and the expressive possibilities of aquatint etching.
