Callanish Light Study — Jenny Mason-Gunning
Callanish Light Study is a relief solar plate print created as part of an experimental series exploring contrast, atmosphere, and the shifting relationship between stone and sky.
In this variation, the sky is held as white, allowing the standing stones to rise dark and solid against an open field of light. Unlike a fully silhouetted approach, subtle detail is left within the stones, giving them texture and presence rather than pure flat shadow.
The relief solar plate process lends itself beautifully to this kind of graphic experimentation. Working in strong oppositions of light and dark, the image is built through clarity and restraint, where atmosphere emerges from negative space rather than tonal layering.
The composition feels stark and elemental — ancient forms anchored to the earth beneath a blank, luminous sky. The white space intensifies the stillness of the scene, creating a sense of exposure and quiet drama.
This print reflects a playful exploration of light within the Callanish subject, allowing the monument to shift in mood through the simplest changes: inversion, contrast, and the balance of detail against silhouette.
