Which Gunning Etching Press Size should I choose?
Choosing the right press size depends on the largest prints you envision creating and your available workspace. It’s recommended to select a press bed that comfortably accommodates the maximum plate and paper size you plan to use, with enough room for a good margin around the edges. This approach ensures that you won’t outgrow your press as your printmaking evolves, allowing flexibility for future projects. Our presses are built to last a lifetime, so choosing a size that supports your creative ambitions is a worthwhile investment.
Should I choose gears or direct drive, and what’s the difference?
The choice between a geared and direct drive press depends on the types of plates you plan to work with and the level of ease you want during printing. Here’s a quick guide:
- Relief Printing (Lino, Woodblocks, Letterpress): Relief plates (generally thicker than 2.5mm and less than 8cm) require good pressure but the least amount compared to other techniques. For relief, you’ll apply sticky ink to the raised surface of the plate, use dry paper, and use runners and packing paper on the press. Our press handles plates up to 8cm thick, thanks to the adjustable top roller. Setting the pressure is simple, and both geared and direct drive options work well. The geared option makes pulling the wheel incredibly smooth, requiring minimal effort—sometimes as light as using one or two fingers to move nas spin the wheel.
- Intaglio Printing (Etching, Drypoint, Engraving, Aquatint, solar plate, photoe-etching and mezzotint): Intaglio plates involve inscribing or etching into the surface of the plate, then filling these recesses with oil-based ink and wiping the surface clean. For intaglio, you’ll use paper that has been soaked and blotted and apply heavy pressure with blankets on the press. This is where gears become particularly helpful, as they allow you to apply higher pressure and still pull the press wheel through smoothly. The large round wheel with a handle on a No.2 press, for example, makes intaglio printing feel effortless, even at maximum pressure.
- Mixed Techniques (Collagraph, Tetra Pak, Monoprinting, Drypoint, etc.): For plates that fall somewhere between relief and intaglio, such as collagraph and drypoint, medium pressure is typically needed. Gears make life much easier here, too, as they reduce the effort needed to pull the press through, but the gears are not essential at all the press works beautifully without them – they just make life a lot easier.
- Great News: If you start with a direct drive and later decide you’d like gears, you can easily upgrade. We can post the gear attachment, which bolts onto the side of the press. This brilliant design by specialist engineer and printmaker Dave Mason-Gunning allows for versatility as your printing needs evolve.
How do I set the pressure on my Gunning Etching Press?
Setting the pressure on a Gunning Etching Press is straightforward, and the level of pressure depends on the type of plate you’re working with:
- Relief Plates (up to 8cm thick): Use light pressure with runners or packing paper.
- Place your runners between the bed and the top roller on the press.
- Turn the top roller down until it just “bites” onto the runners. Test the setup—if the top roller spins freely, the pressure is too light. If it feels difficult to pull through, slightly release the pressure. This method ensures the correct amount of pressure for relief printing.
- Intaglio Plates: Use heavy pressure with blankets to press ink into the paper.
- Place your blankets in the press, with the thinnest blanket directly on top of the paper you’re printing on (use a tissue layer in between for protection).
- Center your press bed between the rollers. Tighten the top roller fully by turning clockwise until both sides feel evenly tight, then back off by a ½ turn.
- Do a test (ghost) print to check your embossing and adjust if necessary.
- Mixed Techniques: Use medium pressure, with flexibility to adjust based on the texture and depth of your plate.
- Tighten the pressure fully by turning clockwise until both sides are even and cannot turn further. Then, back off by a full turn.
- Do a ghost print to check your embossing and fine-tune as needed.
Note: Each ½ turn adjusts the top roller height by 1mm, allowing precise control over pressure.
For geared presses, the pull-through is very smooth even with higher pressure, making it easier on the arms. With direct drive presses, the pulling action works effectively, though the geared option provides added ease, especially for heavier pressure settings.
Do I need gears, or can I start with direct drive and add gears later?
Our presses are designed with flexibility in mind. You can start with a direct drive press, and if you later decide you’d prefer the added ease of gears, we can simply post you a gear attachment that bolts easily onto the side of the press. This adaptable feature allows you to upgrade as your printing needs evolve, ensuring that your press can grow along with your creative practice.

Is the press maintenance-free?
Gunning Etching Presses are designed to be maintenance-free, featuring a powder-coated frame to prevent rust, a stainless steel top roller, and a compact resin bed, all resistant to corrosion. The use of self-lubricating oilite bushings in all moving parts, including the gears, eliminates the need for additional oiling or greasing. To ensure optimal performance and longevity, it’s important to follow the guidelines provided in the user manual. This includes practices such as avoiding leaving wet blankets on the press overnight and drying them thoroughly after intensive printing sessions. Adhering to these recommendations will help maintain your press and blankets in excellent condition.
How durable is the Gunning Etching Press?
Our Gunning Etching Presses are designed and built to last a lifetime, crafted with top-quality materials and precise engineering. Every component of a Gunning Etching Press—from the powder-coated frame to the stainless-steel roller and durable bed—is made to withstand the demands of a professional studio environment. With proper care, this press will remain in exceptional condition for decades.
Our commitment to quality dates back to the 1980s, when Dave Gunning (senior) built the first Gunning Etching Press. In fact, there are studios still using those original presses to this day, a testament to their longevity and our dedication to lasting craftsmanship. Many of our customers have been working with their presses for years, and in our own family studio, these presses have been in heavy daily use across generations. We love what we do, and each Gunning Etching Press reflects that passion and expertise, ensuring it will be a reliable tool for life.
What’s included with the press?
When you purchase a Gunning Etching Press, we provide the following essentials to ensure you’re ready to start printing immediately:
- Printing Blanket: One 80% unwoven wool blanket, ideal for various printmaking techniques.
- 4mm Thick Runners: These facilitate printing relief plates up to 4mm thick, ensuring smooth operation.
As specialist printmakers who actively create plates, ink, and print daily in our own studios and gallery, we understand the nuances of different printmaking processes. When you purchase your press, let us know what you plan to print, and we can recommend any additional accessories you might need to enhance your printmaking experience.
What’s the lead time or delivery time?
Our Gunning Etching Presses are crafted to the highest standard and are always in demand! Lead times can vary based on the time of year and your choice of press. For standard models, lead time ranges from 4 to 12 weeks, while bespoke models are scheduled into our production calendar. We’re committed to delivering your press as swiftly as possible, and whether you choose a standard or custom model, we know you’ll find it well worth the wait!
Can I print on thicker plates with the Gunning Etching Press?
Yes! Our Gunning Etching Presses can accommodate plates up to 8cm thick. The top roller lifts to allow for a range of plate heights, making it suitable for various techniques. We also sell runners in different heights to help you achieve the correct pressure for thicker plates.
How is relief printing different from intaglio and planographic printing on the Gunning Etching Press?
Here’s a quick comparison
- Relief Printing: Ink is applied to the surface of a raised plate (like lino or woodblock), and dry paper is pressed onto it. Typically, less pressure is needed, and the ink is sticky, rolled onto the surface of the plate.
- Intaglio Printing: Ink is pushed into recessed areas of an etched or engraved plate. The surface is wiped clean, and damp paper is pressed into the grooves under high pressure, using blankets to help transfer the ink.
- Planographic Printing (e.g., Monoprinting): A flat plate is used without raised or recessed areas. Ink is applied to the surface, and paper is pressed onto it to transfer the image. The pressure can vary depending on the desired effect.
How Do I Maintain My Gunning Etching Press?
Although Gunning Etching Presses are designed to be virtually maintenance-free, a few simple practices can help keep your press in perfect condition:
- Avoid Leaving Wet Blankets in the Press Overnight: This will prevent any potential moisture buildup. Although the top roller is stainless steel and won’t rust, it’s a good habit to remove wet blankets and dry them out after a heavy printing session to keep them fresh and in great shape.
- Care for Your Blankets: To extend the life of your printing blankets, allow them to dry fully after each use. If you’ve used Somerset paper or other textured papers, be aware that fibres can spread. Wiping down your blankets and the press bed every so often will help keep everything clean.
- Compact Resin Press Bed: The press bed is made from compact resin, which will not rust or degrade, even with regular use. All materials will however move and change a little over time but the materials we have chosen to build our presses are the best and should last you a life time.
- Powder-Coated Main Body: The main body of your press is powder-coated, protecting it from corrosion. You can choose the colour when you order, and this finish will keep it looking like new for years to come.
- Self-Lubricating Bushings: All moving parts, including the gears, are fitted with oilite bushings—high-quality brass rings impregnated with oil. This means there’s no need to add oil or grease; the bushings will keep everything moving smoothly. For peace of mind, you could mark a check-up on your calendar for 10 years down the line, but generally, no additional lubrication is needed.
By following these simple practices, you’ll ensure your Gunning Etching Press remains in excellent working condition, ready to produce beautiful prints for decades.
Do you know how to use the Gunning Etching Presses that you build?
Absolutely! Our family business is rooted in a deep, generational love for printmaking. Here’s a bit about our journey.
My dad, Dave Gunning, started it all in the 1970s after university. In 1980, he designed and built the first Gunning Etching Press. His goal was to create a press versatile enough to print all types of plates to the highest standard, not just one technique. Over the years, he built and sold these presses while travelling the world, capturing monumental sites, and establishing himself as a respected artist.
When I, Jenny Mason-Gunning, graduated with a specialist degree in printmaking, I wanted to work with my dad. However, he encouraged me to carve my own path, so I opened my own gallery, taught myself framing, and began making my own work, taking on commissions, and running specialist printmaking workshops in a studio I designed myself. Alongside this, I delved into website design and SEO, which enabled us to promote and sell the Gunning Etching Presses online. As our collaboration grew, Dad offered me a commission for each press sold, bringing us together as a team.
A few years later, my sister, Sarah, joined the business. With her incredible skill as a curator, Sarah now manages the gallery, framing, and giclée printing, allowing me to focus on my art, commissions, Gunning Etching Press sales, and running workshops. We’ve been working together happily for over 20 years now.
In 2018, my husband, Dave Mason-Gunning, took on the engineering and innovation side of the business. With his dual expertise in printmaking and engineering, he has reimagined the Gunning Etching Press, introducing gears, motorised options, and other advanced features to meet the needs of today’s printmakers.
In short, our presses aren’t just products—we live and breathe printmaking every day. From my dad’s original design in 1980 to my husband’s recent innovations, our family’s dedication, experience, and passion are embedded in each press we create. We actively use these presses in our own work, workshops, and demonstrations. We also offer personalised setup and support to ensure that every artist gets the most from their Gunning Etching Press.
What’s the difference between direct drive and geared presses?
The main difference between direct drive and geared presses is in how the bed is pulled through. A direct drive press provides a simple, straightforward operation that’s ideal for lighter pressure settings, making it suitable for many types of printmaking. A geared press, on the other hand, incorporates a gear mechanism that reduces the effort needed to pull the bed through, especially under higher pressure. This makes geared presses especially helpful for intaglio and other techniques that require heavier pressure, providing a smoother, easier pull-through.
Can the press handle different printmaking techniques?
Yes, Gunning Etching Presses are versatile and can handle a range of printmaking techniques, including intaglio, relief, and planographic printing. The press allows for precise adjustments to the pressure, enabling you to switch between techniques with ease. Whether you’re working with fine photogravure, drypoint, etching, collagraph, monoprinting, lino, woodblock, letterpress litho our presses are designed to accommodate the unique pressure requirements of each method, making them an excellent choice for multi-technique printmakers.
How easy is it to move and install the press?
Gunning Etching Presses are engineered for both robustness and user-friendly assembly. Despite their sturdy construction, they are designed for straightforward disassembly and reassembly, facilitating easy relocation or installation in studios with limited space. Key features include:
- Removable Components: The star or round wheel detaches with a single load-bearing bolt; the bed is secured by two safety stop bolts; the press separates from the stand via four self-locating bolts; and the stand itself disassembles with four Allen key bolts.
- Precision Engineering: Each part is precision-built to ensure seamless reassembly, maintaining the press’s stability and strength.
For those seeking assistance, we offer a delivery and setup service. Our team will install the press in your studio and provide a comprehensive demonstration, ensuring you’re ready to begin printing immediately. This service is particularly beneficial for larger presses that may require additional hands during setup.
Whether you choose to assemble the press yourself or opt for our professional setup, our design prioritises ease of use without compromising on durability.
What is the warranty or guarantee on the press?
Our presses come with a comprehensive 3-year warranty covering all parts, reflecting our confidence in their quality and durability. Each component is designed and crafted by us with longevity in mind, ensuring that your Gunning Etching Press is built to withstand a lifetime of creative use. We stand by our products and are committed to providing support if any issues arise. For more specific details on warranty terms for your chosen model, please feel free to reach out to us.
Do you offer training or workshops on using the press?
Yes, we offer a range of dynamic workshops and training sessions designed to fit your unique needs. Jenny Mason-Gunning, a highly skilled printmaker, provides everything from standard workshops to fully customised sessions tailored to exactly what you want to learn. Whether you prefer online lessons, in-person guidance at Jenny’s studio, or even a hands-on experience in your own workspace, Jenny is here to support you.
From hourly sessions to full-day intensives, Jenny offers flexible options to ensure you get the most out of your printmaking journey. Whether it’s mastering a specific technique, learning the ins and outs of your press, or exploring new creative processes, Jenny’s expertise and personalised guidance make every workshop an inspiring experience.
Additionally, we provide user guides and personalised demonstrations during press setup for those opting for our delivery service. If you have any questions or need ongoing support, we’re always just a call or email away.
Can the press be customised (colour, wheel type, etc.)?
Absolutely! Customising your Gunning Etching Press is part of the fun, and we’re the only press company that offers this unique service. Choose a colour that truly reflects your personality—whether it’s a bold turquoise, a sparkle finish, or even a custom-coloured wheel. You can also select between a round or star wheel and add other optional features to make the press uniquely yours. With these customisation options, your press won’t just be a tool; it’ll be a true reflection of your style and creative spirit.
