Heather Boxall – About the Artist
Born in Gravesend, Kent, and raised along the southeast Kent coast, Heather now lives and works in West Yorkshire. She holds a degree in Fine Art from Winchester School of Art (1981) and an MA in Printmaking from Bradford School of Art. Heather is a painter and printmaker whose practice is deeply invested in exploring the ‘stuff of colour.’
Her work considers colour not only as a visual phenomenon but as a complex, mutable experience that influences perception, emotion, and cognition. Drawing on insights from neuroscience, particularly the research of Anya Hurlbert, Heather reflects on how colour is both a universal and intensely personal experience—shaped uniquely within each observer’s mind.
Since 2018, Heather has developed a compelling body of work titled Colour Standards, inspired by the British Colour Council’s Dictionary of Colour Standards. First published in 1934, this dictionary was a pioneering effort to standardise colours across the textile and decorative industries within the British Empire. Using the 1951 edition, which features 240 vibrant silk thread colour swatches, Heather’s exhibition presents a series of paintings, prints, and works on paper that reinterpret and reimagine this historical colour chart.
For her Ironbridge Fine Arts exhibition, Heather embarks on an ambitious project to reproduce all 240 colours through printmaking, examining the rich history and visual intensity of these standards. Her work invites viewers to engage with colour both as a cultural artefact and a sensory experience, bridging past and present through the lens of artistic practice.
