Washline mounts are traditionally used with watercolor paintings, drawn in hand and using carefully chosen colours to balance and enhance the artwork. A cross-hinged ruling pen holds ink and slowly releases it as it is drawn. Any combination of lines can be used but they are normally finished with a washline which is the colour applied between the two lines. It takes a lot of practice and a steady hand to create the perfect finish however it is worth the patience when you see the finished result!

Our Guide to Fine Art Trade Guilds Mount Board Levels
As an Advanced Guild Certified Framer, we have taken rigorous exams held by the Fine Art Trade Guild to ensure we are knowledgeable about the types of mountboards available and their applications. In 2020 the Fine Art Trade Guild released a revised Mount Board Standards reclassifying the levels and going into greater depth than ever before. This has allowed framers and manufacturers to ensure Mountboard meets the exact requirements for the four different framing levels. These requirements include PH level, contents, lightfastness, bleed resistance, use of OBA’s, Microchamber Technology, and lots more! Below is an overview of the different levels…
- Made from 100% Cotton Fibres
- Referred to as Museum board, cotton core or cotton rag
- Lignin free
- Blue Wool Scale 5 or above
- Must not contain any post-consumer waste
- The use of optical brightening agents (OBA’s) is not allowed
- Must pass the Photo Activity Test (PAT Test)
- Can be used at Framing Levels 1,2,3 and 4
- Made from minimum 84% Alpha cellulose
- Referred to as Conservation board or Apha Cellulose board
- Maximum Lignin content 0.65%
- Blue Wool Scale 4 or above
- Colour must not bleed
- Must not contain any post-consumer waste
- The use of optical brightening agents (OBA’s) is not allowed
- Must pass the Photo Activity Test (PAT Test)
- Can be used at Framing Levels 2,3 and 4
- Made from minimum 84% Alpha cellulose
- Referred to as Whitecore or Whitecore Plus
- Maximum Lignin content 0.65%
- Blue Wool Scale 4 or above for facing paper
- No colour bleed requirements
- Must not contain any post-consumer waste
- The use of optical brightening agents (OBA) must be specified
- Can be used at Framing Levels 3 and 4
- Made from untreated wood pulp that contains lignin
- Referred to as Creamcore and standard board
- Maximum Lignin content 0.65%
- Blue Wool Scale – Not required
- No colour bleed requirements
- Can contain post-consumer waste
- Can use optical brightening agents (OBA)
- Can be used at Framing Level 4 only
