James Millicamp’s Exhibition at Ironbridge Fine Arts
We take great pleasure in showcasing the talented artist James Millichamp as a prominent figure in our Winter Exhibition for 2023. Millichamp, a dedicated artist and educator, is deeply rooted in Shropshire and the West Midlands. He pursued his artistic journey at The School of Art, University of Wolverhampton, and The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, City of Birmingham University. Presently, he serves as the Head of Creative Technologies at Shrewsbury High School.
James draws his creative inspiration from his immediate environment, and this influence resonates strongly in his exhibition pieces, which offer a unique perspective on the Shropshire landscape.
In his artistic expression, he approaches color and form from an abstract angle, drawing inspiration from luminaries like Per Adolfsen, Edward Kemshell, and Sigmar Polke. Linear elements are presented with a minimal yet illustrative quality, inviting viewers to engage with and interpret the scenes. His work delves into the profoundly personal and spiritual connection between an individual and their environment, especially in our ever-evolving contemporary culture, where one often finds themselves as a silent observer amidst the bustling crowds, detached from the chaotic clamor of the human condition. It prompts us to consider: “Are we not all alone amidst the baying crowds?”

Sam talks about his work and the exhibition…
“I grew up in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park near Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Surrounded by natural outdoor beauty I have always been a very outdoors person. I love traveling and seeing different landscapes and cultures around the work. While most of my career has been purely scientific, I use photography as a creative outlet.”
“After university in Leeds, I embarked on a round the world trip which included south east Asia, Australia, New Zealand, USA and a year in Canada. Since then I have had a long stint in Bath, UK, followed by another trip with my wife around south east asia and settling in New Zealand for nearly 3 years. We now live in Four Crosses, Powys, near the border with Shropshire.”
“My photographic style varies hugely, from black and white studio portraits to outdoor extreme sports. My real passion is being outdoors and spotting rare wildlife when there is no one else around. At the same time, I love interacting with people and learning about their ideas, projects, and transform these into a finished piece using visual storytelling. When photographing landscapes, I use a variety of techniques to try and represent not only the view, but the feeling of standing in that space. “
“The Wonderful Wales Collection is a culmination of several years of landscape photography across Wales. The collection aims to show the beauty of the Welsh landscape in its various forms, while giving the viewer the sense and feeling of being in the landscape as the photographer was. The collection is occasionally updated with new images which suit the ensemble. ”
