Landscape, Memory, and Quiet Contemplation by Jay Caskie

Jay Caskie is a wood engraving printmaker originally from Canada and now living and working in Cornwall. His work explores landscape, memory and our connection to the natural world, shaped by two powerful places: the vast Canadian landscapes of his childhood and the rugged Cornish coastline where he now lives.

Jay studied printmaking at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, receiving his BFA in 2019 before moving to the UK in 2020. Now based in Redruth, Cornwall, he works from his studio and exhibits regularly across the UK and internationally.

Working primarily in wood engraving, Jay creates intricately detailed landscapes that explore themes of place, solitude and our connection to the natural world. His prints serve as windows into contemplative scenes, the intricate details holding the viewer’s attention and fostering a sense of introspection and reflection. He aims to convey not only the physical attributes but also the emotional resonance of the landscapes.

The precision and intimacy of wood engraving lend themselves beautifully to Jay’s approach. Through fine marks, layered textures and carefully considered compositions, he creates landscapes that feel both expansive and intimate. His work captures not only what a landscape looks like, but something of how it feels to be there.

Now surrounded by the Cornish landscape, Jay draws inspiration from the coast, changing weather, shifting light and the physical experience of being within the landscape. These encounters sit alongside memories of the vast Canadian landscapes where he grew up, bringing together different places and experiences within his work.

Jay has exhibited in the UK and internationally, including the Society of Wood Engravers Annual Exhibitions, the RWA Annual Open Exhibition 2025 and the annual Great Print exhibitions. Recently elected as a member of the Society of Wood Engravers, he is passionate about the art of wood engraving and promoting traditional printmaking techniques. His work is also held in private collections across the UK, Australia, the USA, Japan, France and Germany.

The Winter 2026 Exhibition will present a considered selection of Jay Caskie’s new works, available both online and in the gallery. Through his intricate and atmospheric prints, Jay invites us to slow down, look closely and reflect on the landscapes that shape memory, belonging and connection.
