Coming Spring 2026 – Rob Pountney

Watercolour, Landscape and the Dialogue of Time

Rob Pountney will be exhibiting as part of our Spring Exhibition 2026, presenting a new collection of watercolours that explore the Wessex landscape with sensitivity and depth. His practice is rooted in close observation of Dorset’s downlands, river valleys, and ancient earthworks, capturing both the physical contours of the land and the subtle traces of human history embedded within it. Pountney’s work balances precision with atmosphere, using light, shadow, and form to create a dialogue between past and present, permanence and change. Each painting invites viewers to slow down, to trace the curves and angles of the land, and to engage with the layered narratives of place.

Central to Pountney’s approach is a profound attentiveness to the interplay of natural and historical forces. He employs watercolour with a masterful sense of chiaroscuro, allowing the medium to convey both immediacy and quiet reflection. The landscapes he depicts are both intimate and expansive, evoking the rhythms of the natural world while also tracing the subtle imprints of human activity over centuries. His work celebrates the textures, forms, and shifting light of the land, producing images that are contemplative, evocative, and richly detailed.

Pountney’s paintings have been exhibited widely in private and public galleries, where they have been celebrated for their poetic engagement with landscape and history. The Spring Exhibition 2026 will offer audiences the opportunity to experience his latest works, presenting landscapes that are materially rich, visually layered, and emotionally resonant. His practice encourages reflection, curiosity, and a renewed attention to the subtle beauty and enduring presence of the English countryside.
