What could be more special than restoring an original cast and swept frame? We offer a complete frame restoration; casting and carving of broken or missing parts as well as golding and bronzing. Over time these antique carved and swept frames can become fragile, cracks can appear and a light knock can bring off frame detail. The great news is we have an amazing team who are passionate about restoring these frames back to their former glory.
Example
This beautiful frame had large sections completely missing so by creating a mould of an identical corner piece we then cast new sections (in white) before giving a perfect matching finish as shown below.
It’s a fascinating and intricate process; our team have been trained to recast sections of the missing frame using moulds and composite which are hand sculpted, reattached, and finished with Gilding.
Gilding
Guilding is the process of covering or overlaying a surface using gold either in leaf, powder, or liquid. Below is an example of one of our Bobbin frames that has been water-guilded; which is a process of making wood look like gold. It’s a wonderful process that adds such elegance and individuality to a piece!
Caring for Old Frames
Over time, ornate and antique frames can have layers of dust and dirt build-up caused by open fires, insect damage, pollution, or hands! Some people may be tempted to gat a wet cloth or cleaning sprays and wipe them down but beware that Oil and Water Gilding can be brought off/lifted and frame finishes can be ruined. We can offer surface cleaning of old frames and can ensure they are structually sound and giving your Artwork the best housing.
Ensuring Old Frames are not Damaging your Artwork
As an Advanced Guild Certified Framers, we are educated to understand the importance of correct materials and processes for protecting your Artwork. We can assess the materials and processes used in your frame and give you clear advice on the best way to protect your Artwork for years to come. This could be as simple as lining your frame with Aluminium barrier tape or replacing the backboard which both stop harmful acids from leaching into your artwork. We can also replace old glazing with UV Protective Invisible Art Glass to protect your Artwork and give you incredible clarity.
