We have eagerly awaited Malcolm Halsall’s exhibition to Ironbridge Fine Arts on the 1st September 2019. Malcolm’s mesmerizing works not only use mirrors within the landscape to look at the world in a completely unique way but he also delves into his literary passion bringing wonder and intrigue to the viewer.
Malcolm talks about the exhibition…
“There is no logic or any idealisation to the sight of these mirrors and yet there is an almost hypnotic beauty attached. The mirrors embrace an everyday image, giving a new kind of identity in the way it is presented. The mirror adds a hypnotic landscape with a willingness to engage and to perceive. Into a self-elegance of sight, creating a new truth through its own illusion.
A willingness to engage contradiction and imagination not only giving excitement, it gives an interruption to the mirror landscape itself. Through a doorway of discovery and origin into the birth of words.
So I began writing my first novel through inspiration of not only my mirror photography but of childhood and adulthood experience of pain and loss. Through all of those things that ultimately gives you strength and hope. A new foundation of sight in this embryonic state of reflection begins. Going through pages of factual history, embracing the fictional history of the mysterious world of the Mirrors
Many different tales are to be told but the one thing that stays constant are the enchanted mirrors. Many of the images you see within this exhibition are described in my first novel. The set of three tall mirrors on the coastal sea line, for example, are the same ones used in chapter one where the novel begins. Other chapters describe different scenarios with always a mirror structure of some kind existing through history. And by its own definition, a whole new mirror landscape is created. Through this exhibition, the various photos will show this. Rather than individual titles of images, there will be the odd word or sentence alongside. Echoes from the novel itself.
“The light spreads across the water radiating like hundreds, no thousands of tiny light particles like hot breath as it dischargers higher and higher still. With the setting sunlight, emanating from all of the mirrors, solidifying and embracing the hot breath full of warmth, forming and amalgamating all the time,”
Like a pure rhapsody of strength and excitement, harmonising, light into reflective shape as the light becomes crystallised in a luminous flux of warm energy. A fusion of erratic shapes with no rhyme or reason, it just is. Shining triumphantly from the sky into the mirrors. No beginning and no end just whole and alive.”
