An Exhibition that Celebrates Ancient Heritage Through Art

Dave Gunning’s artwork is deeply inspired by his passion for history and the energy of ancient monuments. His artistic journey began over 40 years ago when a visit to the Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber in Wales in 1984 left a lasting impression. While sketching the monument in the rain, Dave felt a powerful energy that has stayed with him ever since. This moment sparked his dedication to documenting prehistoric sites through drawing and etching, creating a personal connection to these ancient places. Over the years, Dave has worked to raise awareness of our megalithic heritage, incorporating influences from both prehistoric UK sites and Egyptian art.

Dave’s main aim as an artist has always been to preserve the legacy of these ancient monuments. His works serve as a reminder of our rich history and the deep connections we share with the land. The exhibition, Megalithic Connections, brings together three sets of small monument prints for the first time. It features drawings, etchings, and steel-etched works that explore the profound impact these ancient sites have had on Dave’s creative process and on our understanding of these historical landmarks.

Throughout his career, Dave has exhibited his work in collections around the world, including the prestigious Royal Collection at Windsor. His art ensures that these ancient monuments remain in our collective memory.

Here Dave Talks about his work and the show…

“I drew this monument in the rain, the encounter changed my life. After finishing the drawing, I felt the need to search out other ancient sites, the feeling of tremendous energy has never left me. 40 years later I am still travelling and drawing. I make prints back in my studio combined with steel etched works. I now live in Bridgnorth, Shropshire where we have studios, and our family gallery is situated in Ironbridge nearby. My main aim as an artist has been to promote and record our ancient sites. I have work in many private and public collections. The late Queen Elizabeth II supported my ancient monument work by accepting a large collection of small etchings into the Royal Collection at Windsor. I have exhibited these etchings with drawings and steel etched work continually promoting and reminding people of our wonderful megalithic heritage. It is a great privilege to be exhibiting at Wiltshire Museum again and so special too.”

The Wiltshire Museum, with its own ties to prehistoric heritage, provides the perfect setting for this exhibition. Visitors will have the chance to experience Dave’s work firsthand, framed with great care by Ironbridge Fine Arts. Each piece is framed using conservation-grade materials, preserving these artworks for future generations. The Luxe Monti Black and Gold moulding was chosen for its historical resonance, adding depth and enhancing the artwork’s presence. Find out more about the Wilshire Museum Here
