My recent drawings feature a selection from some of the vast array of prehistoric round barrows to be found raised up on the undulating downlands of the Dorset landscape. Frequently set in stark silhouette against the sky - the spiritual and human associations of these visual markers of the long dead, invests the landscape with a strangely romantic and haunting quality. I am particularly interested in the way that changing daytime and nocturnal natural lighting conditions bring a completely different atmosphere and mood to individual barrow sites. My use of chiaroscuro (compressed charcoal) in my drawings is intended to enhance the poetic and dramatic dimensions of these ancient landscape settings.
